Can you remember standing up on your very first wave? That feeling of pure exhilaration and joy! Then walking off the beach with that natural buzz still tickling at all your senses… to the point where you can’t stop thinking about it… and you just have to get back out there for another session!
Welcome to the journey of being a surfer! And we can tell you, that feeling never gets old and never goes away!
Whether you’re a learner or a pro, or somewhere in-between, there’s just something special about being in the ocean and riding waves with your mates!
The local surf school has become an institution in almost every local beach town across the world. A virtual symbol of fun and a healthy lifestyle in the community and an opportunity to be introduced to the ocean in safe and controlled environment. A perfect place to start, and the perfect vehicle to improve your skills once you’re up and going.
The humble surf school has come a long way, and it’s not uncommon to find a former (or current) professional surfer pushing you into your very first waves! And who better qualified than someone who earns a living from riding waves around the world!
Current professional surfer and surf school owner, Phillipa Anderson explains what motivated her to start her own school.
“I was traveling all around the world competing, experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, and seeing the most amazing sights around the globe. My career wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the ocean and surfing — so this was a huge part of wanting to start my own surf school.
"I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to experience the ocean through surfing, even if they don’t take it on and become a professional surfer. To offer any age the experience to learn to surf or improve on their surfing, is such an amazing feeling and one that I get experience every day I go to work.”
All surf schools worth their salt have gone through strict accreditation processes, equipped with lifesaving skills and all the gear… even if you have no idea! While incredibly popular with holiday makers on their annual beach escapes, surf schools also give you the opportunity to develop your skills as a surfer.
We don’t want to be riding white waters all our surfing life, and a good instructor will give you confidence and guidance to progress to the level you’re comfortable with. And the good ones will also share experience and good advice on equipment, ocean knowledge and surf forecasting.
And take it from us – consistency is key! You know the old saying about getting back on the horse? Well, it rings true in surfing too! Surfing is hard at first, you’ve got so much to think about besides just standing up on a board while riding a wall of moving water towards the beach. And you generally fall… a lot! But we think falling off in water is way better than falling off a horse and those who’ve done it before will all say the same thing; get back on the board and try again! Because you never know what that next wave could bring, and that’s what keeps us all coming back for more!
So, if you want to learn to surf or even take your surfing to the next level — there’s only one thing to do — look up your local surf school operator and book a lesson (or three). We guarantee you won’t regret it. You’ll walk away stoked and so will your instructor. Just ask Phillipa. “I’ve had so many memories already with kids learning to surf for the first time, overcoming their fears of the ocean, adults getting out of their comfort zones and most importantly seeing everyone smile after their lesson.”
We agree Philsy! That’s why we do what we do!
